After 40 days of fasting, Satan tempts with food! I would fall to that temptation after 40 hrs of not eating. Or if something was just put on the counter that I liked... after 4hrs of not eating!
Then Satan challenges Jesus with God's love! "Go ahead and see if God will truly save you. Does He really care about you?"
And finally, he offers the world!!! Can he do that? Didn't Jesus know who owned the kingdoms of the world and their splendor? Of course he did....Satan.
In the same way we are all tempted with these realities. Our basic desire, God's love for us, and our desire to have authority in this life.
Jesus gives us a great example to follow. He resisted Satan's temptations by placing His faith in the word of God. We too can resist temptation today as we lean on Christ and His word.

I'm having trouble understanding what is meant by we are tempted by our basic desire for God's love for us. I understand that I have a strong desire to have authority and control in this life- I am familiar with that temptation but not the other. Could you explain that farther?
